Garth Smith – Teacher Training – hard decisions and strange interviews – PP62

Published: Feb. 9, 2015, 5:02 p.m.

This week we welcomed Garth Smith back onto the podcast.

It was great to hear what has been happening for Garth in the months since we talked to him before. Back in Episode 18, Garth gave us his insights into behaviour for sports teams - and parents but in the time since that conversation, he has decided to become a teacher.

This is a result of working with children, some of them in challenging circumstances and has required Garth to return to education himself to re-take English, Maths and Science GCSEs.

Garth was brought up in a household which fostered children so his background has led him to do all he can to help children whose own start in life has been difficult. The best way to do this is to become a teacher himself, Garth believes.

The interview process he had to undergo was very different in the two establishments he applied to. You won't be surprised to hear that he decided not to pursue one of the institutions after an uncomfortable and unnecessarily challenging process which means that Garth will have to leave his young family to complete his PGCE.

Despite this and the other challenges of the course, Garth is extremely positive about the prospect of training to be a Primary teacher and we look forward to catching up with him several times during his journey - he is the Pivotal Podcast's official 'man on the inside!'
