IT WAS an exciting day for news junkies: Security issues dominated, with a suspicious gas smell in New York City, a bomb scare at the port of Miami, a chemical leak in suburban Houston, and dead birds dropping from the sky in Austin, Texas.
Meanwhile, Israel is reportedly drawing up plans for a nuclear strike against Iran while President Bush stakes his legacy on the results of the "surge" he apparently intends to send into Baghdad.
