How we hear and interpret messages is informed by our experiences, social positions, and relationships. Often, when we hear a new position on a current political or social issue that is not aligned with what we believe to be true and right, we may be quick to defend our position and ignore anyone or any position that does not confirm what we believe to be true. In other cases, however, we may hear something that confirms what we already believe to be true or right, and we are quick to agree and double-down on our position.
