7 - The Life And Times Of A Sri Lankan Cricketer With Chaminda Vaas, Asanka Gurusinha, Jehan Mubarak

Published: Feb. 27, 2017, 2:05 p.m.

If we told you an Australian international cricketer was doing a four hour round trip on the local bus to get to and from training, you wouldn't believe it. But this is still the case today in Sri Lanka, where the country's top cricketers thrive in spite of a system that falls far short of most of their international opponents.

We talk to Sri Lankan cricket legends Chaminda Vaas and Asanka Gurusinha, along with Jehan Mubarak, who some say could've captained Sri Lanka if given more opportunities.

The trio talk about the mismanagement that has previously plagued Sri Lankan cricket, how the talent pathways differ from countries like Australia, the commercial challenges and how the country has still somehow found a way to success.

Player welfare has also been on the agenda. Without an influential players association, there's been little support particularly for former cricketers facing hardship. In response, Asanka and other past legends have started their own charitable fund.
