63 - John Buchanan on what it takes to lead the best team in the world

Published: Sept. 25, 2019, 5:26 a.m.

John Buchanan is a high performance strategist and the most successful coach in Australian cricket history. After taking on the role of Australian team coach in 1999, John brought a new level of innovation and professionalism that would see the team become World Cup champions, Test cricket champions and Ashes victors.

John now runs his own corporate leadership and high performance consultancy, and has written two books, If Better Is Possible and The Future of Cricket.

John talks us through in fascinating detail how he went about winning the respect of players like Steve Waugh and Adam Gilchrist, managing the different personalities and egos within the now legendary squad, including the differences he had with Shane Warne, and how he went about bringing in significant change - which was welcomed by some, but not everyone.

John also talks about his focus on the whole person not just the athlete, and the important practice of switching on and off to reduce the noise and be able to focus on what’s most important.
