NLP Model to Train Your Brain

Published: July 1, 2021, 7 a.m.

There’s a powerful tool in NLP called the negotiation model. The idea — it’s easier to reach an agreement the more ambiguous the concept up for debate is - think of something like “dinner”, chances are everyone in your family can agree that having dinner is a good thing. . Get more specific about what’s for dinner, and it’s harder to reach a consensus.

The goal of the negotiation model is to reach agreement with as much specificity as possible. When there’s disagreement, the model says to scale back to something a little more ambiguous until you reach agreement.

In today’s episode, we focus on using the negotiation model to reach agreement between your conscious and unconscious minds.

Goals and plans originate in the conscious mind, but it’s the conscious and unconscious minds working together that bring those plans to fruition. If you’re not living your conscious goals and dreams, your unconscious mind isn’t completely on board. And the way you know is that the unconscious mind, by need, will express itself in your environment, circumstances, and events. So, it’s always telling you what your current agreements are.

Your life experience is your unconscious mind showing you how you’re doing on the inside.

The million-dollar question is, how can we get the unconscious mind to embrace conscious goals, plans, and desires?

Use the negotiation model. Here’s how…

Remember that logic and reason is in the domain of the conscious mind, and the unconscious mind communicates through emotions, symbols, metaphors, and stories.

If making specific plans leaves you feeling anxious and uneasy, your unconscious mind is resistant to those plans at that level of specificity. To gain agreement, shift to more ambiguity.

Here’s how…

Ask, “What’s the achievement of my goal going to do for me?” Sit with that for a while, and if it feels too far-fetched, go to another level of ambiguity by asking another question, “What would the achievement of my goal make me feel?”

Your work is to stay in the good-feeling space long enough to go back to more specificity and again ask “What’s the achievement of my goal going to do for me?”. You then stay in specificity for as long as it feels good, and go up to ambiguity to feel better, and so on. Before you know it opportunities and resources will make an entrance and achieving your goals will follow.

And this, my friend, is the work you’ve heard me talk about so many times. This is it. It’s getting the unconscious and conscious minds into agreement through focus and visualization. Do this three times a day for 10 minutes at a time, and your life will change.

It’s not easy. One client calls it reframe hell because it takes conscious effort and focus. But it’s powerful and effective. And with your unconscious mind on board, you can truly achieve what you consciously want.
