Balancing Being and Doing

I look to the people in my space — private clients, those in the Soulful Business Revolution program, and those in the private Facebook group — for inspiration before I recorded this podcast. One thing that’s been coming up lately is the concept of balance. And, wow, we can really be hard on ourselves when we feel like we’re missing the mark.

 

I believe that the best way to view “balance” is to see it as a concept to aim for because perfect balance doesn’t exist in real life. Our lives are in a constant state of flux and change, and so the balance point is always shifting and moving.

 

But, believe me, balance is a concept worth striving for. Maybe you’ve heard me say that the balance between doing and being leads to your having. 

 

That bears repeating — the balance between doing and being leads to your having.

 

I’ve observed that most of us tend to favor one side or the other — doing or being. Some of us do, do, do, do, and we don’t focus on being enough. We’re caught up in doing all the things and trying to do them perfectly. Our focus is all over the place, and it’s easy to fall into confusion and overwhelm. We feel a need to control everything and for things to be just so, and when things don’t work out, we often feel disappointed, resentful, and angry.

 

Then there are those of us who favor the being side. We focus on the internal so much that the external falls by the wayside. This leads to lethargy, a lack of movement, and avoidance. And we end up feeling stuck. 

 

Whether you’re too much on the doing or the being side, you’re at effect. Somewhere in the middle is the sweet spot where we have internal processing with an external check. 

 

Finding the theoretical balance — let’s just call it the intention of balance — begins with awareness. You’ll feel most balanced when you...

  • Have intentions and goals that are worthy of you and what you want
  • Set ecological outcomes that align with who you are
  • Focus on what you want
  • Manage your state
  • Use positive, toward language

 

In the process, give yourself grace and take action. Slow down and recenter when you need to. When you feel re-aligned, get back to the doing. The dance of being and doing will lead to the outcomes you desire.
