The Big 5-0! And who better to be my 50th guest on the #MakeYourMark podcast than Kevin Dineen, NHL star player and head coach, Canadian women\\u2019s gold medal winning coach in 2014, and the list goes on and on. I was thrilled to hear from him a few weeks ago as he had seen a couple of my how-to interview videos via the NHLCA, used my tips and strategies, and has just accepted the head coaching job with the San Diego Gulls, the AHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks! But will he trade in his skates for a surfboard?

\\u201cThe fact is that the actual percentage of the guys who are going to make a living out of the sport is extremely low, so you find (like you say) something you\\u2019re passionate about. I\\u2019ve been incredibly lucky to make a living out of hockey. I\\u2019ve tricked some people for a long time!\\u201d

I\\u2019m a big time hockey fan, and had the chance to dig deep into the sport with Kevin. He shares great advice for up-and-coming hockey players, and tons of stories, including how he nearly punched out his brother when he was told he was drafted by the Hartford Whalers!

\\u201cFind what your strength is and don\\u2019t say \\u2018Ok, I know that is my strength I have to work on other areas of my game.\\u2019 If you\\u2019re a skater continue to work on your skating, if you have a great shot, you make sure that shot stays lethal.\\u201d

We could have gone on for hours, and we will over golf and dinner later this summer. But you can get a head start on it all by sharing less than an hour with us, you\\u2019ll be glad you did!

\\u201cThe moment that I realized the skill was just not there, it was hard to get out of bed some mornings, it\'s not an easy transition, I would say the majority of players really dread when it;s time to hang up the skates and decide what\'s next, and like a lot of things I went through a real funk when i retired.\\u201d

"Scotty Bowman called me up out of the blue and said, \'When you retire it\\u2019s almost like you lost an appendage, the game is so much a part of you, you\\u2019ve lost your identity.\' From saying \\u2018Oh yeah I\\u2019m a hockey player\\u2019, well, no you aren\\u2019t. So what are you? You go through that, and then you go through what I call this 2-year mourning period of \\u2018What\\u2019s next? Where am I going?\\u2019. Until it hits you personally, you just go about like you think you\\u2019re a big strong guy, but when you\'re in that funk, it\\u2019s no fun.\\u201d
