LaKesh Hayes is a native of Columbus, OH but considers Akron to be her second home having lived here for 15 years. Having grown up in kinship and foster care due to an unstable family unit, Lakesh understood the challenges that many children and youth face and the need for positive adult role models. LaKesh finds that positive role models and support have been a safe haven for her. A believer in paying things forward, LaKesh has devoted her efforts and talents to empower, enrich, and educate children and youth of all ages. Some of her previous roles include working as a Residential Supervisor at The Highlands Teen Pregnancy Shelter, A Resident Advisor at Summit County Kids, and her own local girls’ groups called S.H.A.D.E.S and Pearl Talk.

LaKesh’s youth development goes beyond the clock as she volunteers to mentor young ladies, leads, and facilitates children’s church/activities and engages with community organizations. Her passion for children, youth, and families and community engagement lead her to obtain a BIS and a certificate of Nonprofit Management from Kent State University. She is currently the Executive Director of Project Ujima, Inc., a nonprofit organization that guides diverse groups of people to come together to address issues of shared concern, develop relationships of trust, find common ground and go from talk to action. Through Circle dialogues, Ujima creates space for participants to discover their ability to take action that strengthens their community, organization, or group. What we know for sure is that when people engage in collective deliberation, they find the common ground that becomes the foundation for action.
