Jared noticed his Uncle Bob from the corner of his eye. He had come late to the wedding obviously intoxicated, again, and after some uncomfortable exchanges with the bridesmaids was now kicking over a folding chair, and heading for the main table. One of the young groomsmen had attempted to stop him, and was shoved off into the crowd.

Jared quickly reacted and was now standing in front of Uncle Bob, and the wedding cake. Uncle Bob took a wild swing, and Jared took him down. Uncle Bob struggled to get up, amidst profanity exceeding the PA’s volume of the wedding singer. Jared had achieved a mount position, and was EXPANDING his hands and feet by posting, and using his body weight to keep him down.

Calmly Jared said, “I got you Uncle Bob, it’s okay just settle down…Can someone get Uncle Bob some coffee?” After a few short moments Uncle Bob was fully out of breath and Jared, with his EXPANDED group of helpers helped him up, and into a chair away from the crowd, in the far corner of the yard.

Jared, and two other guys he had enlisted, listened to him cry his eyes out about how unfair life had been for him, and how sorry he was for disrupting his nephew’s wedding. All was good, and within the hour Uncle Bob was drinking coffee and toasting the newlyweds with the crowd.

EXPANDING in self-defense looks just like this. First Jared’s EXPANDED vision had seen what was happening. The EXPANDING of Jared’s arms and legs kept Uncle Bob safe, and others safe from his angry actions. Jared EXPANDED by reaching out to others to assist him also. In the end, very little force was exerted because Jared could see beyond the angry drunk, and his EXPANDED vision for a peaceful outcome had saved the day for Uncle Bob, his nephew, his bride, and the wedding party as a whole.

In life when conflict happens, there are many degrees of EXPANSION that are possible. We don’t always see them, and yet they are there. Using an EXPANDED vision of what might be creates new realms of possibility in life. When life seems like an unreasonable, mean drunk that could ruin everything in one moment, EXPAND…
