Breanne and Yoko were evenly matched. To a novice Judoka (Judo player), or spectator, there was nothing going on. Breanne would go in for a hip throw and Yoko would tie her up, negating the throw. The same would happen when Yoko attempted a head and arm throw. Breanne would close the SPACE, and tie her opponent up, neutralizing all chance for a throw or takedown.

The match was tied, all at once the horn sounded and the match went into a sudden death. Although Breanne eventually prevailed, as she was leaving the mat Yoko whispered into Breanne’s ear, “You totally controlled the SPACE, and the match.” They hugged, exchanged social media info, and that was that.

Both Breanne and Yoko knew this essential element of conflict, “The one that controls the SPACE, by definition, controls the outcome.” Conflict is relational. We live and and die, according to our relationships.

The PRINCIPLE of controlling SPACE is vital, yet misunderstood in every day life. It was “closing” the SPACE between them that won the match. The “tie-up” is a closeness thing.

How much SPACE exists between you, your family, your friends, and your business associates, or team members? It’s all about understanding that SPACE, and when appropriate, closing it. How much would your relationship transform if you “closed” that SPACE…?
