City Council to Vote on Detention Center
What would normally be a routine vote has a lot of interest today before the Omaha City Council as they decide whether to approve a county project to build a juvenile youth detention center as part of a courthouse annex in downtown Omaha. Proponents say the smaller number of beds in the center is part of the goal of incarcerating fewer teens. Opponents says fewer beds is a bad idea, there is a better way to spend money on facilities already own, and the $114 million cost will lead to a property tax increase.
