Steve Gladis on Partnerships, Leadership, and Culture

b'Dr. Steve Gladis is an executive coach, author, speaker, and professor at George Mason University. He\\u2019s published 26 books on leadership and thinks a lot about culture and the elements of a great leader. He\\u2019s also a former faculty member at the University of Virginia, served as an FBI special agent, and was a decorated officer in the US Marine Corps. He has a company, Steve Gladis Leadership Partners, that donates a significant portion of corporate profits back to the community. Steve is a giver, somebody who really cares about society and humanity. \\xa0\\n\\xa0\\nSteve had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include:\\n\\u201cThe best partner I\\u2019ve ever had, and I\\u2019ve had her for over 50 years, is my wife\\u201d (6:15).\\n\\u201cWe all need our yin to our yang\\u201d (6:50).\\n\\u201cI never send anything out unless someone else has looked at it\\u201d (7:00).\\n\\u201cYou should be looking for people not like you because they bring the other piece of the puzzle together\\u201d (9:10).\\n\\u201cThe key is to have a mechanism in place before you get in trouble, not when you get in trouble\\u201d (12:15).\\n\\u201cThe best gift that anybody could give anybody else would be get yourself an executive coach in the beginning who can help you work together in this partnership\\u201d (13:15).\\n\\u201cI write every day\\u201d (22:00).\\n\\u201cIn a way, {dyslexia] is the best thing that ever happened to me\\u2026 It\\u2019s given me this creative workaround mentality\\u2026 it\\u2019s taught me how to be resilient\\u201d (26:10).\\n\\u201cIf you\\u2019re always the smartest guy in the room, you\\u2019re in the wrong room\\u201d (27:50).\\n\\u201cAnything can be an opportunity\\u201d (31:30).\\n\\u201c[The biggest mistakes leaders make] is not telling or showing people how much they care\\u201d (33:40).\\n\\u201cTrust is at the center of all relationships\\u201d (34:00).\\n\\u201cHead, heart, and hands is compassion\\u2026 it\\u2019s an active thing\\u201d (40:20).\\n\\u201cYou can tell when somebody really cares about you\\u201d (40:50).\\n\\u201cIf you like what you\\u2019re doing, you\\u2019re making a decent living at it, and you\\u2019re having fun at it, why wouldn\\u2019t you want to keep doing it?\\u201d (47:50).\\n\\u201cSome of the most miserable people I know are some of the richest people I know\\u201d (48:00).\\n\\u201cYou can\\u2019t hit a target you can\\u2019t see\\u201d (51:15).\\n\\u201cUntil people know what they want, it\\u2019s really hard to get them to where they want to go\\u201d (52:10).\\n\\u201cTeams head towards entropy all the time\\u201d (54:40).\\n\\u201cNothing stays level, especially in the relationship world\\u201d (55:00).\\n\\u201cStuff happens. You have to be ready for that\\u201d (1:02:45).\\n\\u201cExperiments fail.
