The power of mega-corporations like Google, Facebook, Amazon, Monsanto, Pfizer, ExxonMobil, and is looked on with a mixture of admiration, awe and fear.
They are bigger than many governments in the world, and often affect the direction of world history itself. They control our lives in so many countless ways, we don't even know.
However, despite their size, none of these are the biggest or most powerful corporation in history. That distinction goes to the East India Company, which existed from 1600-1858, 258 years.
Imagine a company with the influence of Google or Amazon, granted a state-sanctioned monopoly and the right to levy taxes abroad – and with MI6 or CIA and the army at its disposal.
At its height, it has been estimated that 1 in 4 of every transaction in the world was directly connected to the East India Company in some way.
It was THEY who colonised India, not the British Government.
They waged wars and controlled territory not only in India, but also other parts of Asia and Africa. That is, until in 1857, when its Indian soldiers rebelled against it and destroyed the Company in a brutal war.
That destruction, it turns out, however, was mainly in name, and formally.
