Heavyweight Champ John Tate John Tate was an American professional boxer who competed from 1977 to 1988 and held the WBA heavyweight title from 1979 to 1980. As an amateur, he won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the 1976 Summer Olympics. As a professional Tate earned two million dollars in the ring, sadly he ended up penniless and living on the street during the last years of his life. Kerry Pharr hired Tate as a boxing trainer shortly before his death. In this podcast, Kerry shares his experience with the champ in the weeks prior to his death.
