Be Aware to Appreciate

Morning Mantra: "Pain has taught me to appreciate the things that don't hurt." 
I've experienced quite a bit of physical pain in the last few months.  It seemed that as soon as I was over the pain from my kidney stones, my back went out.
But there was a few days in between and I remember thinking, "Wow, I'm not in pain."
How many days am I not in pain and don't really appreciate it? I take it for granted.
It's like that with everything.  You need to experience the opposite of things to be able to compare, in order to learn appreciation.
You need pain to appreciate when things don't hurt.
You need loneliness to appreciate loving relationships.
Fear to experience courage.
Sad to appreciate happy.
Tired to understand rested, and so on.
Everything we go through has a purpose, even the not-so-great things.  
Learning to be aware of what's good requires us to experience and recognize the opposite.
