Spotify, the Stockholm Sweden streaming music behemoth, is embroiled in a lawsuit that claims up to 21% of the 30 million songs on Spotify are unlicensed. Earlier in 2017, Spotify settled a class action lawsuit for $43 million to settle a claim that songwriters and producers were not properly paid their “mechanical royalties”. Can you explain what a “mechanical royalty” is and why Spotify can’t seem to stay out of the courts?
