Dr Takunda Chitaka joined me on the Research stories segment on the Green Living Chats podcast. Our conversation was based on her PhD thesis, which looked into the Inclusion of leakage into life cycle management of plastic products as a material choice. So we dived into the issue of plastics, plastic waste pollution and life cycle assessments.

Dr Takunda Chitaka is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow working under the DSI/NRF/CSIR Chair in Waste and Society at the University of the Western Cape. Takunda is a Chemical Engineer by education, holding a PhD from the University of Cape Town (UCT). She focused on the life cycle management of plastic products prone to accumulation in the marine environment. She also holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering and an MPhil specialising in Sustainable Mineral Resource Development from UCT. Takunda’s research is driven by the desire to develop specific knowledge surrounding the myriad of sustainable development challenges developing countries face. This includes research experience in minerals beneficiation, waste management, multi-criteria decision making, life cycle assessment and sustainability performance assessment.
