Mikey talks to NEIL MCMILLAN of KIBBLE and an independent child protection consultant

Published: May 24, 2022, midnight

NEIL MCMILLAN is the Executive Director of Kibble, a charity established to care for and protect children. Neil is also an independent child protection consultant working for Save the Children and UNICEF.

He has worked in East and Central Africa and China, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, Ukraine and Belarus.

Neil was in care. He got into trouble with the police. He did not go to school, and his childhood was not a very good time for him. Neil dropped out of school and worked mainly in the service industry. He wanted to do something in his community, but he did not know what.

He got into social work by accident. Neil got a part-time job in a youth club and found he was good at it. He found his vocation. It was then that he started getting qualified.

Anybody can come into care work, but they need to work on themselves first and go through a period of self-healing. It would be difficult to work with traumatised people if you have some unfinished business in your own life. Neil's international work has seen him work with children caught up in war, and he has worked in areas where he has had armed police escorts.
