Why You Should Talk to Your Breakfast Today

Published: March 26, 2021, noon

Talking to your food is weird, I’ll admit it – but doing so slows you down and makes you more aware of your environment as well as what you’re eating. The benefits of this awareness ripple throughout your day to create moments of opportunity and joy you’d otherwise miss. It also gives you a chance to correct course when you notice things are off. For all those reasons and more, I recommend having a conversation with your meal today.

Episode Highlights

01:04    I tell people to talk to their food because our daily lives are so crammed full with stuff that we don’t tune into this moment anymore.

02:06    What if your food had a message for you?

03:09    Slowing down and asking myself about my food – where it came from, what its life was like, how I prepared it – lets me become more aware of where I am in that moment and how I want to experience that moment.

03:30    This expanded sense of time gives me such gratitude.

04:00    Talking to my food lets me notice how I already started my day and decide if I am off to the start I want emotionally and mentally.

04:27    I want to be able to take 20 seconds and not feel rushed.

05:00    Knowing this moment of introspection is coming brings up so much awareness of what’s going on in my head and body and gives me a chance to do something about it.

05:15    There is an energy about things, and we pick up information from our environment constantly even if we aren’t consciously aware of it.

06:01    When we slow down and notice our environment, it gives us a lot of power and ability to adjust and work with that space, and therefore adjust how we feel and act.

06:20    I choose breakfast to start with because most people do eat something early in their day, and it gives you a chance to tap into your environment and thoughts early enough to make a difference in your experience of that day.

06:53    We create our environment, and it creates us. We are not separate from it. But we have the power to interact and be willing participants instead of passive players.

07:17    Talking to my breakfast has given me a huge awareness of my body and how tense or relaxed I am. It gives me insight into my unconscious emotions and thoughts.

08:12    Let me take you on my breakfast journey so you can see what it’s like to have a conversation with your food and your environment like this.

09:16    Water takes on different forms with different sounds and feelings and I try to impart love and gratitude to my bowl of food.

11:00    For me it’s about extending an experience and not worrying about what comes after that, so I can truly enjoy and appreciate those 20 seconds of preparing to eat my food.

12:21    If something is on my mind that I need to set aside to be present with my meal, that alerts me that I have to take time to nourish myself and feel those feelings and thoughts more fully.

12:36    I want to make lots of opportunities to hear my own subconscious noise so I can subdue it and let it go.

12:47    By noticing what I am carrying around it makes an opportunity to let a lot of it go.
