Picking the Wrong Goals - What I Learn From Giving Up

Published: Oct. 8, 2021, noon

What does giving up teach us about ourselves and our real values? At what point do we give up on a goal or a project or ourselves and why? Is there truth or a gift in those moments?

45    When you start a project do you leave yourself an out?

00    I think we set ourselves up to have a path that’s easier to follow, then judge ourselves for following it.

30    In setting goals, I seem to consistently pick the second-best action rather than the fastest or most effective route.

40    When my efforts seem to fail to get me the progress or results I wanted, my motivation plummets and I want to give up.

00    I judge myself for failing to make progress when in reality I just chose the hardest way to get to my goal and I haven’t stuck with it long enough yet.

00    So many of my actions are distractions disguised as stepping stones to my goals, but they’re not actually leading there.

30    Where have I set myself up to actually complete a goal? Or have I set myself up to complete infinite side quests?

18    Of course I am going to choose the mini-goals that feel super fun, easy, and able to be accomplished in a short amount of time.

00    I feel totally accomplished when I can check things off my list, even if they are unimportant.

30    How are you setting yourself up to move forward in your life? What have you chosen is important to do?

30    When we set ourselves up to fail at something, it’s often because the goals we say we have aren’t the goals we actually have in our hearts.

40    It’s difficult to motivate around the bigger goal I say I have when I am already enjoying my life as it is.

50    Were my activities serving a purpose? Yes. Were they serving the purpose of the goal I thought I was pursuing? No.

50    What is my goal, and am I ready for that goal right now, or not?

30    Where have I subconsciously set myself up to succeed or fail at something, and do I want to do anything about it?

20    Maybe you’re not as interested in the goal you set as you said you were.

20    The things we choose to do serve our purposes, whether we are conscious of them or not.
