Getting In Alignment With Your Purpose

Published: July 30, 2021, noon

We get hung up believing there is or ought to be a divine or grander purpose to our existence than simply existing. Is that true or necessary to have a life that has a positive impact? How do you get in alignment with your purpose?

Episode Highlights

00:20    It’s uniquely human to believe that there is some grander purpose to existing than existing alone and to fear we’ve fallen out of alignment with our purpose.

00:30    What if no matter what action or inaction you’ve taken, you’re in alignment with your purpose of existing. What if that’s what free will really is – the ability to do what we want and choose even as we are fulfilling our contract of existence by default?

01:30    When we say how do I stay in alignment with my purpose, what we’re really asking is how do I return to an action I’ve decided is worthy of my effort when things get hard and progress is disappointing.

01:50    We want to leave a legacy from our existence and believe in our impact beyond only our own experience and our own lives. This is a desire to connect and be received.

02:30    We create narrow avenues that we deem appropriate for our impact and service, and then unfortunately only notice our impact in those avenues and nowhere else.

02:40    No matter what parameters you set for where and how you want to impact lives, you will always move it farther away as you approach it.

03:00    Our human nature is to take what we’ve done and say, “It’s not good enough!”

03:10    When we do something we set out to do, we deny that it was any good or of any importance, because we’ve already done it.

03:15    We have this idea that for our purpose to be meaningful and to be worthy of celebration, it has to be impossible to achieve, and somehow we must beat the odds – but mainly, it has to be impossible, above all else.

03:30    We believe that we’ll feel a different way about life and about ourselves when we achieve the goal that is our life’s purpose – but the reality is that we will feel how we feel now, but just have done more stuff.

04:20    We hope that achieving our purpose will fill the hole inside that feels unworthy, unsafe, or unsatisfied. When we do something we thought was our mission and we still feel crap, we assume we just haven’t identified our mission yet. The truth is, nothing you DO will fill that hole. The feeling we seek comes from living, not accomplishing.

06:00    I find it difficult to just enjoy the moment – my brain jumps in like, “What about the next moment? What are we supposed to be DOING!?”

06:20    My thought, “What do I need to do next to feel OK about this moment now?” is a symptom of Doing Culture, rather than Being Culture.

06:40    Thought I want to evict: How dare you enjoy your day off and not be thinking about how you’re going to better yourself on Monday!

07:30    What does it mean to stay in alignment and attunement with our mission in life?

07:40    Maybe your existence fulfills the goal of achieving your life’s purpose. Can you be OK if that is true? What would that mean? What do you get to do now?

07:50    One foot in front of the other, even if it’s only a millimeter, is still movement.

08:30    I’m always experiencing movement and a moment that I’ll never get again.

09:10    What if our success in life includes all of the smiles we’ve inspired?

11:11    We don’t often have awareness of the positi
