Coping With Unpredictability

Published: Oct. 1, 2021, noon

We all hate unpredictability. We just really want to know what’s going to happen, what to expect, and what’s expected of us. But life always has other plans…

Episode Highlights

00    When told to prepare, we prepare – but we feel awfully betrayed if our efforts were unnecessary.

50    No matter what, we can come up with something to be upset about. But we can equally come up with things to be happy about, too.

00    Our crankiness is because we are all freaking tired of not knowing what the f is going on anymore.

00    Everyone is too tired to fight for supplies these days. No food? Try another aisle, buy the shitty cereal and jerky, and move on.

30    If it doesn’t work out, nothing is really working out lately, so whatever.

15    On the upside, prepping for a storm made me clean my yard more thoroughly than I have in years.

20    Immediately everyone blew up on social media their pent-up rage about how they were lied to about the severity of this storm.

00    People were mad they had to do extra work to prepare for something that didn’t even happen.

20    Because we have no idea what’s going on with society, what’s going to happen, or what will be expected of us, we’re continually tired and distrustful.

00    The illusion we had of predictability was always an illusion, but we worked really hard to build it in and when it gets insulted we get bitter and prone to snapping.

00    I feel like no matter what I prepare for it won’t matter because I will have it wrong. And that’s exhausting and depressing.

10    We can’t truly plan for or outsmart the future, but we’re always going to try.

30    How do we deal with unpredictability without driving ourselves crazy?

00    Learning to lose the judgment I have about dropping things when I lose energy has been the challenge of this year for me.

40    I have adopted the value that having a ton of energy is both important and respectable and a thing I should strive for, but I can’t always have overabundant flowing energy.

30    The best we can do is conserve our energy for what truly matters to us, and that will be different for all of us, too.

00    No amount of trying to dive ahead is going to change the situation or change what’s appropriate for action right now.
