Accomplishment and Self Judgment

Published: March 12, 2021, 1 p.m.

Have you ever been complimented on how accomplished you are and thought – wait, are they talking about ME? It’s good news that others don’t see all the behind-the-scenes thoughts and mess in our lives – it means they get to appreciate us for what truly gets done, and not all the feelings we have on the way there.

Episode Highlights

01:40    Despite what you think, you’re getting way more done than you give yourself credit for, and others are looking at your life thinking, “Wow, you’re amazing!”

02:10    Focusing on extremely small goals or micro-goals is one way to always have something to talk about and keep your forward momentum going.

03:11    I’ve kept small wins and easy accomplishments on my to-do list years after early motherhood because it is delightful to check off an easy win every day, and this motivates me to do the real hard things.

04:30    Paying attention to all the things going on in our lives is its own victory and to outside eyes, simply managing it is impressive and counts for a lot.

04:50    Sometimes we keep quiet about everything we have going on for fear that we’ll be judged for not doing it well enough or fast enough, but I have found speaking up about even small goals has the opposite effect!

05:41    Some tasks are just going to stress you out and cause you pain, but getting them started or just out of the way provides a lot of relief. I use this motivation for tasks like taxes.

07:44    Recovering from mistakes in tiny steps can prove to yourself that everything is pretty malleable and adjustable in the long term, which offers a huge amount of relief and freedom to fail. And the more you fail, the more you accomplish!

08:09    My real secret to getting a lot done is surrendering to the fact that I will f*ck up somewhere along the line, and being OK with that.

09:00    What would it be like if you could feel safe even in front of an audience to completely bomb at your attempted goal? What would you be willing to try then?

09:28    If you feel safe, then you don’t have to add additional judgement to each failure, and instead you notice only how much you accomplished, how much more you understand and can try now.

09:50    Don’t fall victim to believing that once you have an idea you’re already too late to start towards it. We can psych ourselves out of starting by fearing everyone else is ahead of us and we’ll never catch up or do it well enough.

10:44    Whatever you are working on, congratulate yourself for even getting started! You are already on your way.

11:30    Nobody else in the world knows when you’ve internally given up on yourself or your project unless you announce it. So you have a HUGE amount of leeway to come back to projects and keep going.
