When Monroe, Michigan\'s temperatures hit 101 in June 1919, residents sought relief in the Lake Erie waters at Monroe piers and Toledo Beach. The ice cream parlors and "near beer" emporiums also had a brisk business. And did you know there was a time when the bounty on rat heads turned in to local authorities was at least 5 cents a head? These are among the headlines that were in The Monroe Evening News in June 1919; and part of our monthly "100 years ago" column. Audio production by Paula Wethington for The Monroe News.
