Two-man chains

A very common method of defense, immediate people hold their hands to form a chain and tries to trap the raider and recede back when the raider attacks.

Three-man chains

Usually executed with covers and the middle man, this is not that common but effective against some raiders as this prevents them from going too much inside to get points.

Lone warrior

This is a strategy used with everyone standing alone without holding hands, usually done in scenarios with fewer than 5 people present in the defending team. Very intense and provocative and can be really risky against a good raider. If you have great corners or covers, this move can be lethal.

Protecting the raider

If in the team you have one key raider, all the other players allow him to play in the middle and stand in formation ahead of the raider protecting him. This strategy is similar to the one in chess where you protect your King.

Advance defense

Baulk line advance, Bonus line advance

Another provocative strategy used when defense is under pressure not to let the raider take a point or make the raid legal by crossing the baulk line. A very risky move but if the raider is average, can work.

Bonus line advance is when the formation of defense stands in front of the bonus line trying to make it impossible for the raider to get a bonus point. This is fairly common strategy and can work well most of the times.

Sacrificial defense

Surrender point, Surrender raid

Two types of strategies depending on the situation, if the defender is the last man standing and the team wants the inevitable all out done fast and move on with the game, defender goes to the raider and surrenders. This is a surrender raid, where the raider need not sweat to get the points.

The second situation is more complicated; if the defending team is leading by more than 2 points and it is the last moments of the match, maybe the last raid, one defender stands in front of the whole defense formation and sacrifices himself and does not let the raider go past him and allow him to take multiple points. This is a very clever strategy and is not seen often.
