People see the planet differently after they\'ve been to space. It\'s a phenomenon called "The Overview Effect", and it\'s a term first coined by author Frank White in 1987.

\\n

But interestingly, the concept of The Overview Effect did not come to Mr. White from a trip to space.

\\n

On this edition of The Ex Terra Podcast, host Tom Patton talks with Author Frank White about his book "The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution" and his follow-up book "The Cosma Hypothesis: Implications of the Overview Effect".

\\n

Tom talks with Mr. White about how he conceived of The Overview Effect, how that perception has changed over the intervening years, and how the growth of space tourism could alter, however slowly, the course of world events as more people experience the view of Earth from space. He has interviewed dozens of astronauts and now space tourists who have traveled into space, both for long-duration flights and suborbital hops. All talk about how seeing the planet from a different perspective changes them, some subtly, but others fundamentally.

\\n

White sees humankind as eventually migrating off our home planet, whether to orbital habitats or other planets.

\\n

He also believes that all potential world leaders should be required to experience The Overview Effect, whether through actual space travel or in virtual reality. Not a world without borders, but one in which the borders are seen for what they are ... artificial lines drawn by people.
