On this edition of The Ex Terra Podcast, we talk with Guy de Carufel, the founder and CTO of Cognitive Space, a company developing automated satellite management systems using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Currently, satellites are managed by micro-managing each individual spacecraft. But with the number of active satellites forecast to increase by a factor of 20 in just the next 10 years, handling these orbital assets will become a major challenge. Automated satellite management will provide more than piece of mind, it will enable the satellite industry to reach its fullest potential.

Guy de Carufel has over 13 years experience in the aerospace field, and has started two previous companies: RavenCity - a web and mobile app, and Earnest Space Consulting, a consulting firm supporting NASA. Guy founded Cognitive Space after being frustrated with the very painful process of planning and commanding spacecraft. His technical expertise is in simulation development, flight software, Command and Data handling and machine learning.

Prior to his forays into entrepreneurship, Guy worked in the GN&C team at the first iteration of Firefly. The team developed guidance algorithms, airdrop sequence, parachute design, and simulation (slosh, thruster models, contact models). He also led the verification and validation effort and flight software architecture.

Cognitive Space is a Houston-based company performing research and development of technology in the field of aerospace engineering. The company is currently offering a service called CNTIENT ... is a tailored automated satellite management solution designed to achieve ultimate responsiveness and optimized dynamic satellite scheduling and commanding. This product answers the rapidly growing challenge of effectively operating constellations of complex heterogeneous satellites to meet the need of near real-time remote sensing data collection and low latency global data transfer. Their "FlowVault" product is a next generation cyber-security data management system uniquely suited for the space industry.
