Forced Sterilization Policies in the U.S. Lasted into the 20th Century

Forced sterilization policies targeted minorities and those with disabilities and was widely accepted well into the 20th century. A 1907 Indiana Law informed the Nazi 1933 Third Reich Law on Eugenics. In North Carolina, a state that had the 3rd highest rates of sterilization- 7,600 people from 1929-1973. Eugenics, a term coined by Francis Galton in 1883, applied ides of biology and genetics to human reproduction.
