Every now and again, I'll find myself speaking with a friend who is involved in, without question, an extremely difficult and costly (in multiple ways), emotionally charged and even life-altering challenge. What catches my attention though, what stands out with almost predictable regularity, is their response to my query which focuses on the wisdom of some of the life decisions they had or were contemplating making. "I had/have no choice," "No choice? You just chose!"
How convenient a position to take. How utterly irresponsible to oneself and others. How utterly weak, impotent and directionless. The ultimate in blame shifting! It is to say, "I'm in this position because of the choices of others and I had no say whatsoever as to how I responded to those choices. I'm an innocent victim of circumstances! My response...Bovine Feces!
