Beach Weekly S9E3: The heatwave continues, new CA data privacy bill, Smorgasport & the QFilm Festival return

In Season 9: Episode 3 of Beach Weekly, we are covering major state-wide topics and the return of two favorite Long Beach events.

Southern California is now in its second full week of the largest heatwave of 2022. Though it is believed that the peak of the heatwave was experienced over Labor Day weekend, high temperatures will continue to be felt this week. Long Beach and Los Angeles will see temperatures into the 90s, while the Inland Empire is expected to see temperatures as high as 115 degrees.

The heatwave has brought forth a slew of additional concerns across California. The Route Fire is continuing to rage near Castaic Lake, and has threatened neighborhoods and burned more than 5,000 acres of land. Rolling blackouts for the entire state may be looming in an effort by the California Independent System Operator to prevent the overtaxing of the state electrical grid. The state has been sending "Flex Alerts" to its residents\' mobile devices to stress energy conservation in an effort to such prevent blackouts. At Long Beach State, the extreme heat has prompted some students to voice their concerns over insufficient air ventiliation on some parts of campus.

Last Thursday, Sep. 2, the California Legislature passed bipartisan bill AB 2273 in an ettempt to protect the data privacy of minors online. The bill is the first of its kind in the nation, and is designed to regulate how social media and online platforms use data accumulted from users under the age of 18. AB 2273 is now being considered by Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has until Sep. 30 to veto the bill or sign it into law.

Long Beach State\'s annual festival, Smorgasport, is being held for the first time in two years. The event is for Long Beach State students only, who only need to show their student identification cards and sign a waiver to enter. The festival will include carnival rides, a roller rink, laser tag, a maze, photo booths, food trucks, and much more. Smorgasport will be held from 6pm-10pm on Saturday, Sep. 10 in Parking Lots G3 and E1 on the Long Beach State campus. Students who are in need of disability-related accommodations for the event will need to complete the Bob Murphy Access Center Event Request Form.

On Sep. 8-11, the Long Beach QFilm Festival will in downtown Long Beach. The QFilm Festival is the longest-running film festival in Long Beach, with 2022 being the 29th year of the festival. The QFilm Festival will feature independent documentaries, short films, and tributes about the diversity and experience of LGBTQ+ communities. Festival goers can purchase tickets online at qfilmslongbeach.com.
