Cutternation Podcast #70 - Matt Florer & Matt Bergandi Matt Florer enters his second season with San Diego in 2020, serving as the pitching coach for the Toreros.  In 2019, Florer mentored a staff that saw three of its pitchers drafted in the 2019 MLB Draft (Chris Murphy, 6th round, Travis Kuhn, 19th round and Josh Hendrickson, 38th round). The Toreros also saw improvements in most pitching categories, including wins, team ERA, hits per game and batting average against, among others. Florer's staff ranked four out of the top five pitchers in the WCC for most strike-outs per nine innings and Chris Murphy ended the season ranked 22nd in the nation in this category.   Prior to USD, Florer spent four seasons coaching at his Alma Mater, Loyola Marymount University, including two as the pitching coach (2017 and 2018). In 2017, Florer helped guide LMU to the 2017 WCC Championship -- the first title for the Lions since 2000. His Lion pitching staff turned in the sixth-best ERA in program history (3.46) and sixth-most victories in a season (38). On the conference and national levels, LMU's hurlers led the WCC in WHIP (1.19) and ERA, while placing 5th and 18th in the nation, respectively.  Matt Bergandi enters his first season with the San Diego baseball staff in 2020 as the Director of Player Development. Bergandi works primarily with the Torero pitching staff and coaches to develop the team. He also handles the day to day analytics and technologies used by the team and field maintenance.   Prior to USD, Bergandi worked at San Francisco State as a volunteer assistant coach in charge of the catchers and helped the team reach the 2019 CCAA Baseball Championships. Bergandi began his coaching career at Mission College, where the Saints secured a conference championship in 2018.
