What happened in Wuhan one year ago?

January 23, 2021 is the first anniversary of the shutting down of the city of Wuhan.

Over the past year, too much has happened in China and the world.

But if you sum it up in one sentence, it is probably that some people in the West thought that the epidemic would become China's "Chernobyl", but they never expected that the epidemic would eventually become the West's "Waterloo".

Behind this sentence, there is actually a narrative logic.

When the epidemic broke out in Wuhan a year ago, some people in Wuhan and Hubei faced a new and unknown virus and made some mistakes that seemed stupid at hindsight. In the eyes of some people in the West, these mistakes "perfectly" confirm their deep "judgment" of the Chinese system and model, so they fantasized, just like "Chernobyl" eventually disintegrated the Soviet Union. The epidemic will also cause China's system to crack and collapse.

But what they never expected was that in the face of the epidemic, after China experienced the initial panic, the nationwide system was well activated. In the end, the whole Chinese society adopted a scientifically-based and very effective anti-epidemic method. Large-scale nucleic acid testing, detailed epidemiological investigation, timely isolation and treatment, and ultimately, early diagnosis, early detection, early isolation and early treatment in the face of the epidemic.

This kind of successful anti-epidemic measures is based on science, but to be successfully implemented, it also requires a strong government, social organization, and mobilization capabilities. It also requires a cultural tradition of unity among China’s 1.4 billion people.

It is these factors that allowed China to achieve a decisive victory in the fight against the epidemic in just a few months. As the epidemic spread throughout the world, China's domestic economic and social life gradually returned to normal. This not only saved the lives and livelihoods of countless Chinese people, but also allowed China to become the world's production and supply center of anti-epidemic materials and the center of the world's economic recovery when the world was facing a severe impact.

China Explained will show you that because of China’s continued success in industrial upgrading, technological innovation and realizing its huge potential, it is an unstoppable process. The inevitable rise of China may feel intimidating and some simply reject it. Don’t be. China’s rise is part of the new global trend unlike what we have seen in the past one hundred years. Embrace the change and seize the opportunity.
