According to the South China Morning Post, John Thornton, the US chairman of the China-US Financial Roundtable and former Goldman Sachs president, spent three weeks in Shanghai for quarantine in early August and met with the Vice Premier of China in Beijing at the end of August. then left for Xinjiang for a week. He stayed in China for a total of six weeks.


The SCMP quoted a "person familiar with the matter" who requested anonymity, saying, "Thornton's trip was similar in nature to Henry Kissinger's secret trip to China in 1971."
