American Double Standard on Tik Tok

Published: Aug. 14, 2020, 5 a.m.

You may be surprised that there are few elites in China who like Tik Tok or its Chinese version Douyin. Everyone agrees that Douyin’s short video content consumes a lot of user time and has little educational benefits. Its use of recommendation algorithms makes the content addictive. The slogan of “resisting Douyin and saving China” was once very popular.

Unexpectedly, Trump actually came out to boycott Tik Tok, and wanted to completely block the existence of Tik Tok in the United States. However, the reason for the ban is not that it thinks American teenagers playing Tik Tok is not conducive to learning and growth, but that it threatens the national security of the United States. Anyone who watches those mindless and silly videos would agree that they have nothing to do with national security of the United States!

When Douyin was expanding overseas markets, in order to meet compliance requirements, it specially registered an overseas company and even changed its name to TikTok. Other than software core is the same, from the name to the main body of the company, TikTok is different from Douyin. It has been cut from the domestic company and implemented two different operating rules. Tik Tok has fully satisfied all the requirements put forward by the United States. TikTok complies with US laws and sets up its servers in the United States. All data stays in the United States only. The content reviewers are Americans. The middle and high-level managers are also Americans. Even the president is American. Except for the parent company, TikTok is an American company. In order to relieve the US government’s concerns, TikTok even announced that it will hand over its algorithm recommendation model to Americans for review.

In order to reflect its "inclusiveness and openness," the US government initially allowed the Chinese company TikTok to exist, at least for a while. Then, TikTok exploded in popularity, and reached the top of the global download list in January 2020, and continued its crazy speed.

In order to defeat TikTok, Facebook copied TikTok's model and launched short video softwares such as Lasso and Reels, but all failed. TikTok's users continue to grow wildly. The low-intellectual and entertaining short video content best satisfies the demand in the United States.

I am sure many of you have heard and are convinced of the following statements: The United States is a market economy, and the government will never intervene in the affairs of enterprises. It is regulated by the invisible hand of the market, which prevents government officials from seeking power. The United States is a country under the rule of law, and private property is sacred and inviolable. The United States is a democratic country. Everything depends on the operation of the system and does not rely on the rule of man at all. Even if a dog becomes president, the United States will not deviate from the right track.

Now that Trump forcibly banned TikTok and dispelled all of the above rumors in one go. Lies can deceive some for a while, but they cannot deceive forever.
