ROUND 17 - ALICIA NAPOLEON

Published: Aug. 27, 2020, 2 p.m.

Pat Healy sits down with former World Champion, Overthrow Gym Owner and Broadway Boxing analyst Alicia Napoleon Espinosa. The 12-2(7KO's) former world champion speaks on the birth of her nickname "The Empress" while in the amateurs. Alicia grew up in a traditional Italian family but hungered for her father's attention which was lacking at the time. Alicia's love for sports at a young age led her to baseball where Alicia's athleticism shined through, dominating against the boys. However, limits were put on her dreams after being told as a girl she can't play pro baseball. In Alicia's words, "this is where the fight began". Alicia touches on the lack of pay and promotion in women's boxing and the much needed support from the networks and fans. Alicia continues to be a voice for equality in women's boxing and sports in general. Pat and Alicia talk about recent big fights in women's boxing such as Jessica McCaskill vs. Cecilia Braekhus and Katie Taylor vs Delfine Persoon. Hot topics include: the need for greater promotion and fighter pay in women's boxing and her much anticipated world title rematch against Elin Cederroos.
