Meet Cassandra | Behind The Artist Interviews #01

Hi, my name is Cassandra McKenzie Wood, and I am an Instagram poet. You may better know me as my pen name @cm.writer from Instagram. I am 18 years old and I'm from Calgary, Alberta. Today I wanted to talk to you a little bit about what writing poetry means to me.
First and foremost, poetry is a medium for me to better understand myself and the world around me. But since I first started writing two years ago, it's become a platform to advocate for modern issues that the world is facing today, such as mental health and gender inequality.
Since I started writing, I've published my debut anthology, The Roots of the Goddess, the project is forever meaningful for me and to see support outpouring from all around the world truly warms my heart.
Today, I wanted to share with you a poem from my new anthology that I am currently writing, and it will be on its way in several months.
Here it is: “We live at the speed of light watching the horizon approach, growing older, becoming bolder, watching the ghosts of our past selves forget that they exist at all. We fall asleep and wake up to this pace, for what's before us appear like sun drops on a window and nothing more. Winter, spring, summer into fall by past like a ripple in the pond and all at once I'm under water with the smell of my mother's perfume between my teeth, like a bad dream reminding me of every choice I did not make. The thing is when you live at the speed of light, it's never time to savor what's right in front of you. Slow down.”
