Background to the Star Trek Deep Space Nine Episode "The Quickening"

AIDS reached its peak in the 90's, with the death of a part of the crew of Star Trek DS9. Gangster rapper Easy E died quickly, and Greg Louganis admitted he had the disease when diving in the Olympics. AIDS allegories were making it not only in Science Fiction but also in Historical Fiction like the movie The Restoration starring Robert Downey Jr.  It was this movie that first inspired Ira Steven Behr, executive producer of Deep Space Nine to finally do an episode about AIDS, but focus on the arrogance of Doctor Bashir rather than making it too political or controversial. This episode questions and then restores faith in the positive future of Star Trek.
