The Secret to Getting a Job in Family Law

Published: Oct. 14, 2010, 11:30 a.m.

This week we’ve focused on how to get a family law job. Our podcasts have featured interviews with leading attorneys family law firms in Atlanta and Toronto. Today we move west to Memphis, Tennessee. Miles Mason is the founder of Miles Mason Family Law Group. Miles is licensed as an attorney, but he is also a CPA. I think that background gives him a different perspective on hiring. He comes at things from a different angle and even uses psychological testing. You’ll learn a great deal from listening to Miles. Keep in mind that Miles, Lisa Gelman, and Randy Kessler each have their own unique perspective on hiring, but they agree more than they disagree. Be sure to listen carefully for the responses and behaviors they seek when they’re screening candidates for positions in their firms. Give the employer what it wants, and you’re more likely to get an offer. Be careful, however, not to give the employer so much of what it wants that you talk yourself into a position that really isn’t right for you. Finding a place where you can grow and thrive is far more important than just latching onto the first job to come along.
