My guest Megan Kim, shares two riveting stories about growing up in Nebraska as a Korean Immigrant.  As she moved on to college she was faced with an experience of how it felt to be told that she was “like” her best friend. She never saw herself as anything other than an American immigrant whose family moved here from Korea. Megan faced what it felt like to be compared to her best friend who had a different upbringing though both from the mid-west.  Her friend grew up in a White family and Megan from an Asian family.  It took a bold move on Megan’s part to share with her best friend that in her rush to make Megan “like” her that she had not understood or recognized the differences between them.  Megan’s story moved me and help me understand not only the immigration story but why seeing the differences first is critical to recognizing the gifts that other cultures bring to the fabric of America.
