03 X 114 The Blind Perspective 45: When Do We Stop Living in Our Forefather's Shadow?

On April 1, 2022, Pope Francis visited Canada, and specifically Edmonton, Quebec City and Iqaluit, in Nunavut, in an effort to begin the mending of the relationships between the Catholic Church and the vast tribes of Indigenous people across the world.

Spearheaded by Canada’s Truth and Reconciliations Commission, the church and governments across the world have begun reparations to indigenous in an effort to make up for decades, and possibly heal some open wounds that have not yet begun healing.

It also seems that Black Lives Matter groups are forcing cities, states and provinces to re-name city streets, tear down statues and destroy landmarks because they were associated with slave owners.

Dundas Street, in the center of downtown Toronto, is a street that cuts across Toronto, from east to west, but BLM groups are forcing the city to rename the street, as it was named for a former slave owner who Faught to stop the abolition of slavery in England. The petition, which saw fourteen thousand signatures in the first twenty-four hours, forced the city to look at it’s naming conventions, and seeing to the placement of historical artifacts in the city.

Likewise, south of the border, hundreds of monuments are being taken down in the same vein as the renaming of streets to stop memorializing events and people who championed such abhorrent events that should not have happened in the first place.

The question then becomes, are these monuments and streets still being thought of in the same way they were over one hundred years ago?

At what point do people stop paying for their elders past mistakes?

Should streets be renamed simply because they were named over one hundred years ago by someone who isn’t even alive?

We’ll also be talking about news events that have happened over the past week, so tune in.

Join our panel, on Friday nights at 8:00 pm (EST), 5:00 pm (PST) and 1:00 am (GMT), as they discuss topical news items of importance from a blind perspective.

The Blind Perspective is an interactive show, allowing for the participation of the audience.
