02 X 273 The Blind Perspective 31: Bail Reform, are you Really Presumed Innocent

Published: Nov. 12, 2022, 11:30 p.m.

With mid-term elections coming up, one of the major platforms being espoused is crime legislation, and specifically bail reform.\n\nIn fact, nearly 500,000 people are sitting in jail, on any given day, simply because they cannot afford their bail. In some cases, this sort of detention is minimal, however, where court cases and trials are backlogged, this pre-conviction detention can last for months, if not for years, but yet, these people are not convicted, simply charged for a crime, so one tends to wonder, if civil rights are being guarded here.\n\nOne can say that yes, they are, since they are presented with bail amounts that can be tendered, to ensure the charged person attends court, but it would seem that these bail amounts seem to benefit the rich, and those who cannot afford it, are held without being charged, and in some cases, these bail amounts can be arbitrary, and left to the judge\u2019s discretion.\n\nApproximately, 19 states have adopted bail reform in the United States, however, several of those states are rolling back such reforms because of fear mongering and misinformation provided by police.\n\nIs this a policy that should stand, or should a presumption of innocence be completed to encompass pre-trial convictions?\n\nJoin our panel, on Saturday, 4:00 pm (EST), 1:00 pm (PST), 9:00 pm (GMT), as they discuss topical news items of importance from a blind perspective.\n\nThe Blind Perspective is an interactive show, allowing for the participation of the audience.
