This is a quote from the protagonist doctor in the novel, and it sounds almost exactly like so many of the healthcare workers we hear from today regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. No one knows how long it will last, or how long the hospitals will be filled, or when an effective and mass-produced vaccine will be available, and yet day after day they doctors and nurses and other healthcare professionals go in on the front lines and tend to the sick and dying. It is courageous work.
