With Covid more or less shutting most hospitals down it meant that all the regular patients who went to the ED were forced to wait longer to see a Doctor. This meant many systems were having Medic units sit on patients (No, as MC learns, not *actually* sit on patients) for hours, sometimes an entire shift.
As part of the plan to alleviate this burden, the State sought contract Paramedics to come to local hospitals and watch patients until they got a bed and a nurse. This means Medic units can transfer care to Jonathan and go back in service.
