#19 Vets Want to Give Back, Here's How - Chad Brown, Soul River

Published: Feb. 26, 2019, 6:51 p.m.

A navy career supporting the CBs, a construction division, gave Chad a high level of responsibility and command. It put him in and out of 14 countries. He came home with a lot of anger and frustration, a situation shared by many Vets after experiencing much violence and not getting any help overcoming it before being back in the private world. Wanting to finish school was his driving goal and kept him going to the bright side. But along the way, he lost it, wound up homeless on the streets of Portland and in and out of the VA hospital. A friend put a pole in his hands and taught him how to fish, which turned his life around. He went on to form Soul River a nonprofit 501 c3 focused on bringing veterans as mentors and inner city youth together into the wild rivers of nature inspiring the youth by becoming a guardian, teacher or role model as an act of service into the outdoors. The hope is that it encourages youth participants to grow and become ambassadors of our natural environment.
