'The flood from hell': Canton mayor on Fred's fury

Published: Sept. 1, 2021, 5 a.m.

The little mountain town of Canton has less than 5,000 residents and sits about 17 miles west of Asheville.  In recent weeks, a big chunk of the town found itself underwater after devastating floods caused by the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred.

On this week’s episode of “Tying It Together With Tim Boyum,” the town's 38-year-old mayor, Zeb Smathers, joins us to tell the harrowing stories of what he has seen, the visits from big name politicians and what he hopes for the future of this historic paper mill town.

Ironically, his dad was mayor in 2004 when the town also saw dramatic flooding from the remnants of two hurricanes.
