People widely loved \u2014 and hated \u2014 legendary U.S. Senator Jesse Helms, not only here in North Carolina, but around the world. Much of that hate centered on his stances on the issues of race and the gay community.\xa0However, Senator Helms never knew that he had a gay granddaughter. Fifteen years after his death, his granddaughter, Jennifer Knox, has chosen to speak about it publicly for the first time.\xa0It was first reported in The Assembly by John Drescher.
