Narrowness of the road prevented any other cars from passing while this car continued, time and again, to try to fit into a spot that was probably too small anyway, even if the person driving wasn’t so bad at it, and a backup formed that snaked down the street. From a driver’s window a few cars back, a red face emerged, red with veins webbing across its broad forehead. “If you haven’t gotten it yet, you’re not going to,” a voice screamed out of the face. “Jesus Christ, buddy. Get a move on. This ain’t all about you!”

After thumping once more into the curb with its front still firmly in the throughway of the street, the parking car accepted defeat and left its desired spot, one that was, as already said, probably too small for it anyway. All the cars then continued on their way.

Through it all, the porch swing kept creaking, accepting any sound that might arise as agreeable accompaniment. Ronald Francis squinted into the sunlight to watch the last of the cars disappear from sight. He yawned and grunted and uncrossed his legs to recross them the other way. He shut his eyes again and his breathing returned to its previous heavy state with his soft palate occasionally listing downward into his airway to bring forth deep, chattering snores.
