How to Navigate Race and Oppression as a White Man When it Feels Privileged to Even Ask the Question with Joe Bernstein

Have you ever felt that it is not okay to be a man? Have you ever felt that it is not okay to be a white man? If you answered yes to either then these next two episodes are definitely for you.

\n

These are the types of feelings which have filtered in and out of the collective space unconsciously until their collective explosion in June, as a response to the horrors of the police brutality against black people in the United States.

\n

In the last few months we have seen a shift in what I call collective agreement about what is tolerable. Whilst this was going on I sat down with Joe Bernstein, Leader and Coach for Healthy Masculinity who has been passionate about unpacking the intersections of race and gender\u201d

\n

This first part of the conversation sets the scene for the heavier lifting in part 2.

\n
    \n
  • You will first hear about how Joe came to be the kind of leader who is having such a positive impact on the masculinity space.
  • \n
  • You will learn about the distinction between consumer and creator as well as the tendency for many men\u2019s emotional intelligence to sit either in what Joe calls emotional diarrhoea or emotional constipation
  • \n
  • You will learn about how he came to reflect on privilege and the transformation this awakened.
  • \n
  • And you will start to get a sense of a tension between deepening emotional capacity whilst wrestling with privilege.
  • \n
\n

And In part 2 you will see how this how all connects to the avowals of shame and guilt that white men in particular have been expressing.
