PETER SANTANELLO’S CROW RESERVATION VIDEO https://youtu.be/LON6eGikrKk EPISODE SHORTHAND NOTES: Hunting/ food: shot guns, duck hunting, white tail deer. Non- natives hunting on native land. Tribal lands leased (possibly by BIA) to non-tribal members and the lands used to allow non-tribal people to hunt on tribal land. Crow are banned from hunting on some of their traditional lands due to the landowners disallowing them on property (that was sold by BIA or BLM). Historically Buffalo were killed, the “work around” to allow it was due to large machinery needing stronger leather bands, this was “justifying” killing Buffalo. Non-tribal people are recently allowed to hunt on Crow reservation, this causes regulations by an agency for food that is allowed to be acquired by Crow (people can often barely afford food, rent, utilities and were able to supplement by hunting off the land). “Food desert.” Closest grocery store is 12 miles away, the grocery in town burned down a few years prior due to “arson.” (Grocery- IGA in Hardin and IGA in Lodge Grass).
- food prices at IGA Lodge Grass: 16 sausages for $7, gal milk $8.30, baloney $5.75, cantaloupe $6, bananas $0.80, bag of chips $4.
Sun dried choke cherries can be rehydrated with water. Cattle (based on a vision). Per tradition food was made with protein, fat and berries.
